For a no-nonsense guide to the UK’s best cocktail bars, and they’re nothing short of incredible. Little Nan’s - London
Little Nan's serve their cocktails in teapots and they finish every single night by playing the theme to Eastenders. A bit much? Absolutely not. This kitsch den is home to ornaments worthy of your gran's front living room, colourful murals of Pat Butcher adorn the walls, and corners come decked with cuddly toys and hundreds of twinkling fairy lights. Quirky as they come, keep those pinkies up and slot in some time for cocktails at this weird and wonderful hangout.
Little Yellow Door - London
All the benefits of a house party minus the headache of cleaning up the next day? The Little Yellow Door is a Notting Hill gem, modelled around a London flatshare, and although it sounds bizarre - it works. Complete with a living room, kitchen and a games den where you can play backgammon, musical instruments and poker, it's top spot for a roaring night out with your pals. Join them for one of their famous Sunday roasts or weekend brunch (where you can order London's tallest pancake stack), and order one of their sharing cocktails - they come served in everything from fish tanks to flower vases.
The Washhouse - Manchester
It might look like a laundrette, but we promise you it's anything but. The Washhouse is one of Manchester's dirty little secrets and we're here to pull the hem of the whole operation. Fronting as a place to dump your washing, this elusive joint is actually a cocktail bar, and once you manage to gain entry you'll be let into an intimate snug with a handful of candlelit tables. They have bubbles aplenty but the cocktails are more than worth a spin; they come disguised as bowls of cereal, in sand buckets and vape pens.
Panda and Sons - Edinburgh
Walk in for a trim but leave half cut? Don't be fooled; Panda & Sons is not a barbershop. It's actually one of Edinburgh's top secret bars but you'll have a job trying to find it. Located behind an unassuming bookshelf stuffed with novels, find the hidden entrance and you'll be greeted with a dimly lit room brimming with vintage furniture and trinkets. Craft beers and cocktails are the name of the game here, and they have a killer Guinness Irish coffee that you can't leave without trying.
Tonight Josephine - London
Tonight Josephine has been crowned with the title of 'Europe's most Instagrammed cocktail bar', and for plenty good reason. Celebrity mugshots plaster the toilets (hiya Beiber), you can take selfies in the ceiling because it's obviously made of mirrors and almost everything is pink. Between the neon signs that read 'good girls don't make history' and their menu that boasts Skittle-flavoured shots and cocktails garnished with retro sweets, make sure you pay this badass bar a visit, sharpish.
London Cocktail Club - Bristol
Your friends are busy walking down the aisle and you're more concerned about your next night out? If you're big into dodging reality for a wild night on the tiles, consider London Cocktail Club your unofficial wingman. This Bristol hangout is themed around Neverland (keep an eye out for the juniper forest and the alligator that guards it), and they have one helluva menu; think Peanut Coladas and a cocktail that tastes just like a Black Forest Gâteau. Open until 4am, it's the ideal place to let your imagination run riot.
The Gibson - London
The Gibson is a slinky little speakeasy in Shoreditch and we have a long list of reasons to pay it a visit. It's themed around the Prohibition (a terrible time in history when booze was deemed illegal), the masterminds behind it worked at the world's best bar, and they have one of the most inventive menus in London. Cocktails come topped with clouds of candy floss, edible worms and gelato, and don't even get us started on the glassware. You'll be slurping from skulls, light bulbs, boots and mini bicycles.
The Last Tuesday Society - London
You'll find many, many things at The Last Tuesday Society; a jar of Russell Brand's pubic hair being one of 'em. This kooky bar-cum-museum is - hands down - London's weirdest drinking establishment, boasting everything from mummified cats to McDonald's Happy Meal toys. Unsurprisingly, the cocktails are just as strange as the interiors; think insect garnishes and mixes titled 'This Is Not A Brothel'. Heck, you can even drink them with a stuffed lioness. Curious? You'd be mad not to be.
Cahoots - London
Delays and your face being shoved into a stranger's armpit are common experiences on the tube, but Cahoots is here to change all that. This vintage bar is themed around the London Underground, and the year is permanently set to 1946. Previously an air raid shelter, this blitz-inspired bar serves its alcohol in wartime necessities like tin cans and milk bottle, and they have sing-a-longs and live entertainment every single week. If you're after a proper knees-up (and a little time travel), this is your place.
The Jekyll and Hyde - Birmingham
Do we have any gin fans in the audience? Yes? Fantastic. The Jekyll and Hyde is a vintage gin parlour and an absolute must-visit, even if you do have to travel all the way to Birmingham. It has over 90 bottles of the juniper spirit, gin masterclasses and a menu rampant with ludicrous libations. They even have a beer garden that's themed around Alice in Wonderland. More than a good enough reason to fall down the rabbit hole, if you ask us.
