Cold weather generally means it’s time to embrace the hot drinks. And while the likes of hot chocolate and mulled wine are delightful on their own, why not combine the sweet comfort of one and booze buzz from the other to create something truly magical?

Enter the spiked hot chocolate, aka the answer to all of your festive beverage dreams (am I the only one who dreams about Christmas drinks?). Here’s a guide to the yummiest sounding recipes that Pinterest has to offer.

1. Salted Caramel Rum Hot Chocolate

If your mouth didn’t salivate at the sight of salted caramel, rum and chocolate all in the same sentence then there is clearly something wrong because this BBC Good Food recipe is clearly the stuff of indulgent boozy dreams. The recipe is made with milk and dulce de leche. Hands down one of the most overwhelming things you’ll drink this Christmas.

2. Kahlua Hot Chocolate

Coffee and chocolate are a pretty classic combination these days, right? And if you’re an espresso martini fan this Damn Delicious hot chocolate upgrade might be what you need to carry you through those long winter nights. The marshmallows and syrup drizzle are absolutely compulsory.

3. Amaretto Hot Chocolate Floats

Someone needs to bring back the float, you guys. We may have been getting it wrong all these years (sorry but a scoop of ice cream bobbing around a glass of fizzy drink is not pleasant) but Pint Sized Baker has corrected the error of our ways. The recipe itself doesn’t call for IRL amaretto, that bit’s in the ice cream. But there’s nothing stopping you from adding a splash of Disarrono to spike your hot chocolate a little harder.

4. Slow Cooker Baileys Hot Chocolate

If you haven’t yet worked out how to use the slow cooker your mum bought you for Christmas last year, here’s an excuse to get it out for the first time. The Magical Slow Cooker recipe for a Baileys hot chocolate is more exciting than your standard old hot chocolate because it contains melted chocolate chunks too for a richer, creamier and dreamier beverage. You just need to be prepared to wait an hour and a half to be able to drink it.

5. Whiskey Hot Chocolate

I’m not gonna lie, whisky isn’t normally my calling but just look at that. The My Dish Is Bomb recipe is pretty straightforward and won’t take up too much of your time if you’re after speedy satisfaction. But it’s that cheeky dash of chilli powder that’ll turn it into something special.

6. Baileys And Amaretto Hot-Tails

Little more to say about this exciting concoction from The Londoner than a double dose of booze probably means a double dose of deliciousness… right?

7. Red Wine Hot Chocolate

If you spent the entirety of this article inwardly groaning about how sickly sweet this all sounds, perhaps Super Golden Bake’s recipe will tickle your festive pickle. Nope, red wine and chocolate probably shouldn’t work but there’s plenty of evidence to suggest it does. Like this drink right here.
