If you’re looking for a new way to enjoy an alcoholic beverage, I think we’ve found one. Experiential artists, Bompas & Parr, who are known for their ‘flavour-based experience design, culinary research, architectural installations and contemporary food design’, will be opening their latest project, Alcoholic Architecture, on 30 July in Borough Market.
The immersive experience will see spirits and mixers pumped into the air via powerful humidifiers, which means that rather than drinking alcohol, visitors will be getting drunk from the fumes entering the bloodstream via the body’s mucus membranes – mainly the lungs and eyeballs. Which definitely sounds extremely weird, but also very cool.
Apparently, by breathing in the airborne cocktail, the alcohol bypasses the liver, which allows you to consume 40% less but still feel the same effect. Plus, the humidity is so high (140%) that you can see less than a metre in front of you. A whole new take on ‘beer goggles’, right guys? Visitors will be supplied with protective clothing too, lest the alcohol ruin their threads.
As well as drinking the air, you can order cocktails specially designed to complement the tastes in the air. They’ve calculated that visitors can spend an hour in there, which is the equivalent of a single spirit and mixer. So, not exactly somewhere to go if you want to get off your face, but an experience for sure. Or you could just forgo the whole thing and do it yourself like this guy (don’t).
