It looks like no one can judge me for buying budget alcohol anymore because now it’s winning awards. Want a nice bottle of bubby without splashing the cash? Well look no further because Lidl’s £7.99 Brut is up there with the elites.

After Aldi’s bottle of roséwon an award in May, Lidl is quickly following in its footsteps gaining similar recognition itself, but this time for a bubbly. Crémant de Bourgogne Blanc NV has been awarded a “silver outstanding” in the International Wine and Spirits Competition. This is an achievement alone but especially when you look at the other bottles that were given the same rating.

Portrayed on Lidl’s website as ‘highly underrated’, it looks like people are finally taking note of its great quality as it reportedly sells 10,000 bottles on average per month.

Priced at just £7.99 a bottle, it’s an easy choice between that and the more expensive brands. One of the champagnes also allocated a ‘silver outstanding’ is ‘Veuve Clicquot 2008 vintage Champagne’ which retails for £50 in places like Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

The tasting note online describes the wine as “dry and with plenty of flavour, this has well integrated fizz and a dry, lingering finish”. Crémant is a French sparkling wine that is an often disregarded in favour of the better-known Champagne and Prosecco, although it’s made using the same grapes and a similar method to Champers.

Buying Lidl’s Crémant means you can save money on the bubbles and splash your cash elsewhere. Put the money you’ve saved towards that pair of shoes you’ve been eyeing up all month. It’s almost pay day after all.
