Though the classic shelfie still holds undeniable clout on our social media feeds, recently there’s been a definite shift in the way we’re showcasing our interiors online. It’s as if our focus has zoomed outwards a little: stylishly arranged and usually featuring some variant of house plant, well put-together corners keep grabbing our attention. But are they as effortless as they appear on our Instagram feeds?
With this in mind, each week we’ll be asking one influencer to talk us through the most curated spot in their house. To coincide with London's Frieze week, our latest Story of a Corner sees interior designer and art collector Natalia Miyar show us around her living room. Prepare for a major case of interiors envy...
The space
This corner is part of my sitting room. I love this space because it has all of my favourite fabrics.The eclectic combination [of fabrics and art pieces] works because it is personal love everything in there, and it’s an edited collection of my favourite objects. I also kept things simple and worked with two types of metal, shades of gold and bronze throughout. The muted palette on the fabrics allows the art and objects to take centre stage.
The art
This is the corner of my house which I sit in the most, so I wanted to be surrounded by objects that I love. My parents gave me the art piece when I was just 21. I also have pieces by Hernan Bas in the space, I grew up watching him grow with his art style in Miami so I like to have his pieces near me. I love the bronze dinosaur: when my nephew visits he loves it, too!
The furniture
My favourite part of the corner is the armchairs - I designed them myself, they have perfect proportions and are upholstered them in fabrics by Rose Tarlow which I love. They can swivel and move around and are so cosy and versatile. I just love my dogs Maxi and Oscar, so they had to be included in the pieces on display. I chose a sculpture style frame in which to put them, so they are highlighted within the room. The dinosaur mixes the room up, it adds an element of fun and imagination which is essential to any space. The Ginger & Jagger lamp is a firm favourite, I think I could move homes and just take it anywhere with me. It brings me such good memories. It’s such a good space to just curl up with a good book and feel cocooned.
The textures
All of my interiors are about contrasting texture which you can see in my home. I love the use of the velvets along with the layered effects of the fringing and linen on the seating. I think it’s a mix of wonderful materials with different feels and quality. All of the soft fabrics are contrasted with the high polished brass mixed with the look of distressed timbers. I love the palm fronds lamp; it totally reminds me of my family home in Miami.
