They say you should never judge a book by its cover, but when it comes to coffee table books, we beg to differ. Because, as any interiors aficionado will tell you, coffee books double up as works of art, personal reflections and statement pieces.

There really is no rhyme or reason when it comes to coffee table books - they're about injecting character and charm to your space, after all. But, if you're looking to give your interiors an upgrade, there are some helpful tips and tricks to know. From styling to placement and colour coordination, we've asked interior design consultant and mentor Aarti Popat for the low-down on coffee table books so you can make them work for any room.

How should I style coffee table books?

Although there's no right or wrong way to stack coffee table books, careful placement can go a long way when it comes to creating a chic environment. Popat explains that stacking books in different heights is key to creating visual interest. 'Place bigger books at the bottom and smaller ones on top. You can also lay individual books and place decorative items on top - no more than three,' she says.

Although this might be difficult for bookworms with busy shelves, Popat explains that leaving some 'breathing room' around your books prevents the space from feeling cluttered, which is particularly important for people who live in small spaces. 'Aim for a cohesive look by arranging items in a group or cluster. Odd numbers are best, so ones, threes or fives,' she adds.

Should I colour-coordinate coffee table books?

Popat explains that mixing different colours, textures, style of spines, and front covers helps to create a more interesting aesthetic. But if you want to keep things coordinated, she suggests choosing books with covers that complement your existing colour scheme or that add a pop of colour to the room. 'Some might suggest arranging books in a gradient of colours for a cohesive look, but I find that this only works well on shelving and with a larger volume of books,' she adds.

Coffee table books are one of the best ways to accessorise any room but don't just stop there. Popat says we should never let a book 'do all the hard work' when it comes to styling. 'Always incorporate decorative objects like vases, candles, trays, small plants or sculptures to break up the monotony of books and add depth to the display,' she says.

What kind of books should I put on a coffee table?

Whether you're having friends round for coffee or trying to impress a date, coffee books are a great way to spark conversation, so don't be afraid to show off your creative flair. 'Invest in books that reflect your interests, hobbies, and personality. This makes the display feel more inviting, and it gives you more scope to tell a story, talk about them and express your passions,' says Popat. She also recommends mixing up the sizes and shapes of books. 'Pair larger, heavier books with smaller ones to create visual contrast. It makes people look twice to understand what books you have on your shelves or on your coffee table.'
