Though the classic shelfie still holds undeniable clout on our social media feeds, recently there’s been a definite shift in the way we’re showcasing our interiors online. It’s as if our focus has zoomed outwards a little: stylishly arranged and usually featuring some variant of house plant, well put-together corners keep grabbing our attention. But are they as effortless as they appear on our Instagram feeds?
With this in mind, each week we’ll be asking one influencer to talk us through the most curated spot in their house. For our latest Story of a Corner, DJ and broadcaster Pips Taylor has showed us how she put together her favourite corner of her home.
The Statement Wall
When I moved in, there was white paint on the brick walls, which I stripped off. Now, I love the colour and texture that the exposed brick wall it gives the flat. My flat used to be a factory, so I feel like the brick wall gives my home a warehouse feel that's quite stylish. It also creates the perfect backdrop for my artwork.
The Artwork
My art wall is one of the first things you see when you walk into the house. I studied art history and love visiting exhibitions so an art wall seemed like the perfect fit for my home - I like art to tell a story and to take you to a different place.
The lion picture is one of my favourite pieces - I bought it at a charity auction in aid of Tusk, and it's by the photographer David Yarrow. For me, the photograph represents a moment of awesome power that he has captured within nature. The prints either side are from Disenio, and the top right photo is from my wedding day.
Two other prints I really love are the ones on the lower right-hand side of the wall -the glittered palm trees which reminds me of LA and a beach sunset which relaxes me. They're by a brilliant artist who I found on Instagram called Sara Shakeel. She adds glitter and sparkle to her work which makes the prints playful and fun.
Also, I gave the framed picture of me on a motorbike as a gift to my husband- he loves motorbikes, so I thought it would be fun and a little bit cheeky as a birthday gift!
The Personal Touches
The things in my home are all sentimental in some way or other. I was given the vintage Roberts Digital DAB radio by my employer when I started presenting my first ever radio show, and I use it most mornings. I have my record player on show because I love music - I use it mostly on the weekends when I dance around the flat! As I work in the music industry as a DJ, these two possessions feel really fitting in my home.
