I’ve been in denial about those spider veins (for you clever ones: telangiectasia) on my cheeks for some time. Why? When it comes to my face I have a fear of lasers, needles or anything that may disrupt my sensitive skin. However I took a chance, confronted my fears and paid a visit to Dr. Joney De Souza's clinic.

Dr. Joney, an expert in light therapy and laser treatments, whose belief is that natural results are the best options he can offer his patients, puts me at ease with his honest and sincere approach. He listens to my skin concerns, my fear of procedures and my rant that social media has made us crazy for perfect skin (when really it comes down to careful FaceTuning, no?)

Dr. Joney analysis my skin and confirms my belief that I have sensitive skin, along with thin skin - a perfect combination for telangiectasia.

His recommendation? LED Red Light Therapy.

What Is LED Red Light Therapy?

LED Red Light Therapy is beneficial in the treatment of acne, rosacea, lines and wrinkles. Studies suggest that concentrated red light is absorbed by the mitochondria in the cells and stimulates the generation of more collagen: the building block of skin structure. Light therapy was first discovered by NASA astronauts as a way to grow plants in space. It has since been used for the treatment of certain psychiatric conditions and sleep disorder. Now, it's also used in aesthetic medicine for cosmetic treatment.

How does Red Light Therapy work?

It can help with a variety of skin conditions including redness, rosacea (telangiectasia being level 2 on the rosacea scale), and has anti-ageing benefits, says Dr Joney. It has also been proven to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, increase circulation and improve skin elasticity. The heat and light boost circulation, bringing more blood and nutrients to the area.

The treatment is a great treatment for those who suffer from sensitive skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema and psoriasis.

Who is Red Light Therapy suitable for?

This treatment is suitable for all skin types and can tackle a range of skin concerns.

Does Red Light Therapy hurt?

Depending which LED lights are most appropriate for your skin, the strength and dosage (time) will be adjusted, meaning patients might feel a slight heated tingle with a higher strength dosage.

When will I see results?

The number of treatments you will need can vary with skin type and condition. One session is an ideal ‘pick me up’ for the skin. A course of treatment is recommended for long-term results.

How long does treatment take?

Each session takes between 20-30 minutes.

The result?

After 2 treatments over duration of 10 days, my redness has subsided dramatically. To ensure results last, I’m adding SPF to my moisturisers and will book in for the same treatment in about a year’s time.
