Legendary shoe designer Christian Louboutin has made his first foray into the world of fragrance with the launch of three unique scents.

For the designer, it was important that each scent conveyed its own unique personality. Bikini Questra Sera is inspired by the night air, a heady blend of jasmine and tuberose. Described as ‘the scent of desire, love and adventure,’ Tornade Blonde is a blend of rose, sweet violet and cassis, encased in a shimmering garnet ombré bottle, while the opulent Trouble In Heaven mixes iris, patchouli, tonka absolut and amber.

‘I wanted to celebrate woman and her desires. I wanted these fragrances to enhance an aspect of her personality, or perhaps reveal something about her that no one knew before, maybe not even her, tell a secret, a story,’ Louboutin explains. ‘In a way creating these fragrances is like being a film director; some directors want to control the acting process, others want to reveal the power of character and personality. This is what I try to evoke with shoes and now with the alchemy of fragrance. I want to give women the means to express themselves.’

‘I want you to experience the fragrance in the same way as you experience a piano note being played. So there is the 'ping', the first burst of the scent like the striking of the piano key, followed by a beautiful resonance as the note echoes its sound,’ he adds.

As the story goes, the brand’s iconic red soles came about when Louboutin painted a sample with scarlet nail varnish, so it seemed appropriate that his first beauty venture took the form of a capsule collection of polishes. An immediate hit, the Rouge Louboutin varnishes were encased in bottles topped with a dramatic stiletto spike. In 2015, a range of lipsticks followed.

Louboutin worked closely with designer Thomas Heatherwick to create the striking bottles. The result makes a loop of the fragrance, creating a flow within; a play on Louboutin’s fascination with the idea that the liquid has life and movement within the bottle.

The three fragrances are priced at £215 for 80ml, and are available from Selfridges. Race you to the counter…
