The Organic Beauty Products You Need To Know About

It's Organic Beauty Week so it's time to get clued up on the benefits of using organic products...

Organic Beauty Week

You’re already three minutes late for your bus, trying to finish your stewing coffee whilst simultaneously replying to your WhatsApp group and absent-mindedly massaging body oil into your hair. The very last thing on your mind is the contents of that oil.

In fact, you’re probably grateful you remembered to wear both mascara and underwear. But whilst we often neglect to consider the ingredients involved in our morning beauty routine, taking a moment to think beyond simply getting out the door could prove worthwhile.

From the 19th to the 26th September, The National Soil Association will once again host Organic Beauty Week, during which the independent body campaigns to raise awareness about the multitude of benefits involved with going organic.

It can be easy, as we pluck and wax and slather on fake tan, to neglect taking proper care of sensitive skin. From oiliness, to flaking foreheads, the acne you thought you’d left in middle school to continuous blackheads gathering around your nostrils- many of us are trapped in a vicious cycle of new cleansing regimes and fads.

But what if we take it back to basics and consider what actually goes into the bottles in the bathroom cabinet? We’ve started to take for granted that the pesticides sprayed on to non-organic crops end up on our plate, and increasingly, to embrace the wildflower honey, herbicide-free kale and hand-harvested seaweed lauded by the organic food brigade.

And whilst these may sound like the key components in the breakfast smoothie from hell, they could actually form a rather lovely face mask. In fact, it makes incredibly little sense- especially for those of us with delicate skin, to smear potentially harmful chemicals all over the body’s largest organ.

But, unknowingly, most of us do, every day. That’s why the Soil Association is backing various quality beauty brands with their Campaign for Clarity.

This week, make sure you look for the Soil Association logo to guarantee the integrity of natural ingredients. A product may be labelled as ‘organic’ even if it contains just 1% certified organic ingredients, whereas the independent Association requires verification from 95% of ingredients in oil and extract based products.

With an emphasis placed on sustainability, and no organic brands engaging in animal testing, you can feel pretty virtuous about your effect on plant and wildlife too.

So get into the spirit of Organic Beauty Week- look out for the environment, stand up against cruelty, and do your body’s greatest organ a favour. (That’s your skin, not your heart, for those romantics amongst you).

Whilst Deliciously Ella may advocate the ‘kitchen beautician’ approach, if you’d rather avoid a mortar-and-pestle-induced spinach explosion up your cream walls, we’ve selected some of the best…
