They may be will into awards season by now, but our favourite Hollywood stars haven't let their red carpet A-game slip. For a case in point, see last night's SAG Awards, where it wasn't just the couture gowns or Ryan Gosling that caught our attention.

From modern takes on Old Hollywood glamour to a masterclass in the perfect smokey eye courtesy of Kerry Washington, these were the hair and make-up looks that had us sitting up and taking notes...

Chrissy Teigen

Our forever girl-crush Chrissy Teigen made a strong case for a tangerine take on the classic red lip, teamed with a glowing, subtly sculpted complexion, low-key eye make-up and arched brows. Plus, we’ll be printing out (or, you know, screen-shotting) a picture of those long, balayage waves, with their subtle colour fade-out, and taking it to the hairdressers for our next appointment.

Sophie Turner

We weren’t entirely won over at first (purely because her red Sansa lengths were just so iconic), but we recant: Sophie Turner looks brilliant as a blonde. The Game of Thrones star chose a punchy red lipstick (almost the exact shade as her tomato Louis Vuitton gown), and kept the rest of her look nice and simple.

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington took the smokey eye we’ve been dreaming about and made it a reality for her SAG red carpet look: a bold, angular shape, the ultimate grey-to-black colour fade and dramatic lashes, too. With a talking-point look like this, you can afford to keep the rest of the face simple: Kerry went for some barely-there contouring and glossy lips.

Emma Stone

This painterly green eyeshadow worn by Emma Stone (who now is surely the dead cert for the Best Actress trophy at next month’s Oscars) was inspired by the work of impressionist Claude Monet. ‘Emma’s Alexander McQueen dress features hand embroidered water lilies that reminded me of paintings by Monet,’ make-up artist Rachel Goodwin explained. She used Nars’ Eye Paint in Snake Eyes (£18.50, www.feelunique.co.uk) as a statement shadow, offset with a subtle wash of the brand’s Dolce Vita Blush (£23, www.feelunique.co.uk)

Michelle Williams

Which violet toning shampoo does Michelle Williams use on her shiny blonde crop? Asking for a friend. Whenever we see a picture of the Manchester by the Sea star on the red carpet, we’re consumed with an overwhelming urge to hit the peroxide chop our hair into an angular pixie cut. The Best Supporting Actress nominee stayed close to her signature formula, pairing graphic black liner with glossy pink lips. Now, time to invest in a Louis Vuitton micro-scarf?

Naomie Harris

Best Supporting Actress nominee Naomie Harris has had a flawless red carpet run this season, and the SAGs continues her winning streak of near-perfect (scratch that, entirely perfect) red carpet appearances with a pared back but still striking look: glossy, pale pink lips, the subtlest touch of eyeliner smudged along the waterline, barely-there blush and impeccably sculpted brows. Roll on the Oscars...

Claire Foy

Let’s just take a moment to appreciate Claire Foy: utterly brilliant as Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown, and unquestionably one of the breakout stars of this awards season. For the SAGs, our new red carpet queen (soz) chose to keep things simple with a softly swept-back updo and pale pink lips. Side note: Claire and Emily Blunt would be perfectly cast as sisters, don’t you think?

Janelle Monae

Never one to shy away from a dramatic statement look, H_idden Figures_ and Moonlight star Janelle Monae opted for her now-signature double-bun updo on the SAG red carpet, scattered with tiny floral charms that echoed the embellishments on her dress (a textured white and grey style you might remember from Chanel’s Pre-Fall collection). Plus, a sheer formula applied with a softer, blurred-out finish feels a more modern way to wear fuschia lips.

Maisie Williams

Game of Thrones star Maisie decided to channel the spirit of Old Hollywood for her latest SAGs appearance (at the age of just 19, she’s already a red carpet veteran), with a gothic twist. 1940s retro waves add the perfect amount of volume to her shoulder-length hair (and brilliantly complement her simple-but-classic bias-cut dress), while a dramatic oxblood lip brings Maisie’s look into the 21st century.
