It wasn't all about the dresses, the speeches and, ahem, the extensive trolling of a certain Donald Trump: for the beauty mavens among us, the Oscars was a visual feast, providing us with enough make-up inspiration to take us through until... next year's awards show.

It's no surprise that, on the biggest night in any A-lister's calendar, many stars took beauty inspiration from Hollywood's golden age, opting for a modern take on classic glamour. That's not to say, though, that it was a risk-free red carpet: just look to stars like Ruth Negga, Janelle Monae and Michelle Williams, who chose to shake things up a little (each in their own inimitable style). Here are some of our favourite looks from the night...

Michelle Williams

The pared-back thing certainly works for Michelle Williams. The Manchester by the Sea star made minimalist beauty work on the red carpet, opting for barely-there base, peach lips and defined brows, while the newly trimmed peroxide crop gives her the air of a modern Mia Farrow.

Naomie Harris

The ever-flawless Naomie Harris stuck with the simple look she's been wearing to perfect on this year's awards circuit: poker straight hair in a sleek centre parting, sculpted brows, radiant skin and warm, terracotta shadow.

Brie Larson

Having sported a more polished look for her Oscars debut in 2016, Brie kept things laid back for this year's ceremony, with undone waves subtly swept back off her face. Plus, the soon-to-be Captain Marvel made a strong case for the tangerine red lip. Can we have your make-up artist's phone number please, Brie?

Janelle Monae

Let's just take a moment to gaze in wonder at Janelle Monae, shall we? The luminously beautiful Hidden Figures and Moonlight star is known for her outre hairstyles, but she chose to keep things short and simple for her first Oscars appearance, offsetting her crop with a golden halo of a headband. Eztra points for the pale pink lip and shimmering eye make-up (perfectly offsetting that embellished neckline...)

Ruth Negga

A hairband is clearly this year's accessory micro-trend: Ruth's red jewelled number is the perfect match to her lipstick shade. Aside from that, the Best Actress nominee kept things simple, with a subtle bronze eye and barely-there contour. Oh, to have that bone structure...

Emma Stone

Given that her film La La Land is an unabashed love letter to the musicals of Hollywood's golden age, it makes perfect sense that Emma Stone should channel old school glamour for her Oscars appearance. With soft, side-swept waves, a terracotta-toned red lip and a burnished bronzed eye, she looks like silver screen royalty.

Felicity Jones

Felicity Jones just served us the ultimate spring beauty inspiration: a swept-back ponytail, fresh complexion, peach lips and a classic liner flick. Refreshingly simple, it's the perfect complement to her ballerina-inspired gown.
