The Best Auburn Hair Ideas To Screenshot For Your Next Salon Appointment

From Gigi Hadid to Anya Taylor-Joy, here's all the inspiration you need

Gigi Hadid Auburn Hair

For those of you not blessed with naturally auburn hair, finding the perfect auburn hair dye to maintain the elusive colour, historically sported by celebrities such as Isla Fisher and Emma Stone, is much easier than you think. Oh and if you were considering the red-toned revamp, 2023 is the year to do it. Auburn is big this year, it's one of the hottest hair colour trends of 2023. The Undoing kicked off the craze a couple of years ago when fans went wild for Nicole Kidman's new warmer, darker auburn hair colour. Add The Queen's Gambit and Anya Taylor-Joy's fiery hair colour into the mix as well as Gigi Hadid's foray into auburn last year and you have yourself a hair colour trend.

'Orange rust is a vibrant shade with a smoky finish,' says Queen of colour Harriet Muldoon at Larry King Salon on Gigi's transformation. 'This is perfect on top of balayage and highlights as you can see the multi shades where it’s taken colour.' Her top tip? 'A good colour shampoo, like Redken's Acidic Bonding Shampoo, £21.50, will prevent your colour from fading fast.'

Or take your look up another notch a la Gigi's more recent Jessica Rabbit red reveal at the Met Gala in September. Hairstylist Esther Langham and Colourist Keith Shore's decision switch to deeper, cool toned red waves proved just how versatile red hair can be. The key to this look? Taking it all the way. Go full throttle auburn. Before you do though, there a few questions that you might want to consider.

What Colour Is Auburn?

Auburn hair is commonly described as being a rich deep red shade or a reddish brown. Those who naturally possess red hair make up just 1-2% of the population, but it is a shade that is experimented with by Hollywood A-listers time and time again.

Some actors like Emma Stone have made it their signature look despite it not being their natural hue. Emma has debuted red shades across the colour spectrum, from strawberry blondes to dark red and almost-brown shades. Now the likes of Nicole Kidman and Anya Taylor-Joy are bringing back the auburn hair love via roles in hit TV series The Queen's Gambit and The Undoing.

Red To Auburn Hair

Even natural redheads such as Julianne Moore and Isla Fisher have enhanced their natural colour with red hair dye to bring out the richer, brighter tones. It's a coveted hair colour and one more and more celebs are experimenting with.

Amy Adams, like Emma Stone, is naturally blonde, but she too has found that dying her hair an auburn colour has set her apart from other actresses. Amy's Nocturnal Animals co-star Ellie Bamber, Poldark star Eleanor Tomlinson, Mad Men's Christina Hendricks and Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner (aka Sansa Stark) are also members of the A-list's faux-auburn contingent.

Would I Suit Auburn Hair?

Anyone can experiment with red shades in their hair! It's a statement colour.

Auburn Ombre Hair

Contrary to what may be assumed, redheads can still experiment with highlights, lowlights and ombré. You can opt for bright, coppery-gingery highlights to bring dark red shades to life, or add deep reddish brown lowlights to gingery shades to add more dimension and keep your do on trend.

And you don't need to shy away from balayage either; ask your hairdresser for the best shades to complement your colour - putting strawberry blonde highlights through dark red hair has a very desirable effect.

How To Maintain Red Hair Colour

Coloured red hair is not easy to maintain. The key is warding off colour fade. Before you make the commitment of becoming a redhead you should consider the work that will go into keeping the shade from fading. Firstly, you should refrain from washing your hair for 48 hours after your initial hair dye session. When you do wash it, choose sulfate-free, colour-safe shampoos and conditioners (see gallery below for recommended products) and rinse it with cool water so you don't strip any of the colour.

Red hair will fade easily when exposed to UV rays or too much heat, so use heat protecting products when styling your hair, and consider using a UV protectant spray in the sun.

You may need to use colour enhancing products from time to time to keep the colour rich and vibrant. You may not need to revisit the salon to do this as there are great at-home products on the market.

Yes You Can Achieve The Auburn Hair Look At Home

If you are new to dying your hair, always do a patch test first. Renowned hair colourist Josh Wood gives his top at-home hair dye tips:

'I think the biggest challenge for people is finding the right colour. It's hard to do without an expert around, in the middle of a shopping aisle. If in doubt, go a shade lighter than you think. Get online to learn about technique. There are so many videos and tutorials from people who've been colouring their own hair for years at home. That's key if it's your first time.'
