Victoria Beckham launched her eponymous brand off the back of specific and seriously sexy silhouette. This season, as she prepares to open her first standalone store in Mayfair, she’s reassessed just what that signature means. ‘For me this season was about looking at the classic signature dress and evolving it, making it the core of the catwalk show,’ Victoria explained backstage. ‘It’s a beautiful elongated silhouette. We’ve taken fabrics which we know our customers like - like the dense ribbed jersey which back in the day I used to call the sucky-sucky fabric – we’ve taken those key fabrics and redeveloped them in the studio.’

Victoria looking ultra glossy in one of her midi skirts walking out at the end of the show.

That elongated silhouette meant a midi length hemline, knitted seperates and military, uniform style jackets complete with epaulettes and patch pockets. The palette was limited with natural jute and raffia punctuated with bordeaux and black and we also saw fresh floral screenprints in lemon and rose – what Victoria described as the ‘perfume’ of the collection. There was also a message of relaxation – including a knitted jumpsuit.

‘For me I wanted a collection that was minimal and graphic but I also wanted to have fun – that’s me, it feels very me. I take what I do very, very seriously but I also want to have fun. I think it's really cool.’

Another departure was the debut of footwear for the show. ‘I’m really excited about those – for me it was really important to do shoes this season so I could really finish off my silhouette,’ Victoria said. ‘I always said I would start doing shoes when I couldn’t find what I wanted myself and now was the time for me to start doing that. We don’t know if we’re going to sell them yet – that wasn’t really the thinking.’ With rose leather embellished flats designed with a fierce pointed toe on one end of the scale then heavy, chunky platforms in leopard print at the other, Victoria has covered the spectrum. ‘I love flats, I wear a lot of flats myself – I think is gives an outfit a very modern, cool and young look. It changes the attitude.’

As for her imminent store opening, Victoria is keyed up for the opening next month. ‘It’s a very special space, I’ve dreamt of having a store for a long time. It is conceptual, but not too conceptual – I want people to come in and feel welcome and comfortable. Not everybody’s going to come in and buy something, but that’s ok,’ she says. When asked how she’s coping with opening a store as well as presenting a show, she answers in her typically dry manner, ‘Well the next thing someone would normally ask is am I pregnant?! I seem to get asked that regularly but no, I’m not having another baby – there’s enough going on. But you know it’s a really exciting time for me and my team and there are lot people that have come on this journey with me and they’ve made all this possible.’

She also says she’ll be a presence at the store, so fans might get the chance to grab a glimpse of the lady herself. ‘I love retail - I’ll be taking appointments with people.. maybe be behind the till. Who knows, maybe David will be on the door and Brooklyn will be a Saturday boy!’ Shopgirl VB, you read it here first.
