How To Do Trans-Seasonal Dressing

trans-seasonal

When Spring springs people have a spring in their step and that's just the way it is. Sunnier days mean longer days, and when the air is infused with that heady aroma of daffodil and bluebell – in even the citiest of cities – without even thinking about it, we emerge from our winter hibernation, all smiles and good moods, ready to take on the warmer weather with gusto.

The trouble is, the warmer weather isn't exactly all here; it's landed, but it's stuck in customs...

This, of course, makes deciding what to wear a logistical nightmare. You basically pack a suitcase every time you leave the house – full of all the things you might need, in case the weather turns.

Enter: Trans-Seasonal Dressing – the way in which to dress to accommodate uncertain temperatures, short but sharp sunny spells and the ever-present threat of the April shower.

The Blazer

We all know how practical and versatile the blazer is – work-appropriate, date-appropriate – and over the years, it's seen some excellent tailoring.

This season, however, it's all about longlines and loose fits – with a nod to eccentricity. It's more lightweight than a thick coat, but warmer than a cardigan. It's the ultimate trans-seasonal's trailBLAZER... (Sorry)

The Silk Scarf

Want to keep your neck warm but can't handle a full-on knitted scarf? Here's where the silk scarf comes in. Throw it round your neck, tie it up in knots, even wrap it round your head... the silk scarf is a must-have for most in-between seasons, and especially this one.

Hermes is obviously the go-to 'master' choice, and this year's The Savana Dance – a vintage scarf in 100% silk, designed by Ardmore Artists – is hard to beat.

That said, Dolce & Gabbana have their Carretto print on-sale which is exorbitantly colourful, and for that slightly more affordable option, Rockins have a great feather piece too.

The Shirt/Blouse

An obvious trans-seasonal choice – long-sleeved yet 'breathable' – SS16 shirts are all about novel designs.

Like Givenchy's slit-cleeves crepe blouse, and Lanvin's ruffle pussy-bow blouse, and J.W. Anderson's PUFF-SLEEVED number, and... you get our drift.

The Midi Skirt

Thank goodness the midi-skirt is no longer (soley) the remit of school mistresses the world over, because we are finding them incredibly useful at the moment.

On sunnier days, they sit perfectly above sandals – especially flats – whilst on colder days, our beloved ankle boots suit them just fine, thank you, too.

As with shirts, this season has seen the midi-skirt undergo somewhat of a design transformation, with menswear-inspired tailoring taking centre stage.
