Here’s the latest word to add to your fashion dictionary: shoellery. Translation? Shoes with their very own built-in bling. Specifically, ones that come with their very own anklet straps.
The trend has really become big news thanks to Bottega Veneta, whose sell-out mesh pumps come with gold chains threaded along the length of the foot. They’ll be back in stores by October but in the meantime, there are alternatives: influencer Gala Gonzalez has been wearing Alighieri’s double-loop chain-embellished espadrilles all summer, and this week, Florrie Thomas and Anna Vitiello, the fashion editors behind accessories Instagram account @andfinally, have launched a shoellery collaboration with footwear brand Maxine. Its square-toed Sabi sandals, which are available in beige linen or navy satin, come with a chain that snakes sexily around the ankle. ‘The anklet’s a thing of our teenage past, but you now find it on the chicest women around,’ explains Vitiello. ‘Jewellery on shoes is an extension of this, and subtly nods to the blingy styles that have dominated the past few seasons.’
The shoellery element makes Sabi the ultimate day-to-night sandal. ‘The low heel means you can comfortably walk around all day, while the anklet renders them evening-ready. Wear the navy satin with a slinky slip or team the linen with your favourite white sundress,’ adds Thomas.
If anklets are too much of a flashback to your gap-year glory days, there are subtle options available, too. Topshop’s Cuban-heeled Mercy boots have a single chain that curves across the foot, while Loewe’s sandals can instantly become minimal thongs by unclasping the three strings of colourful beads at the ankle. Clever, no?
