The Saint Laurent autumn winter 18 collection was a story of two halves, and not just because it presented men’s and women’s wear in the same Paris fashion show. It started dark and laden in leather, fur accents and boho layers before erupting into a triumphant series of kitschy floral-print cocktail dresses. Regardless of the personality change, there was one thing that stayed: the black leather ankle boot.
Saint Laurent has a habit of launching the latest footwear trend. Way back when they gave the world the iconic Tribute sandals (that Victoria Beckham couldn’t get enough of) and more recently they introduced us to £6,855 Swarovski crystal boots that before instantly selling out managed to count Rihanna as a fan. These hyped boots jettisoned the slouchy knee-high silhouette into the mainstream. Needless to say, take their new AW18 shoes seriously because it’s likely the shape we'll all be wearing this time next year.
Thankfully this season’s shoes from Saint Laurent’s maestro, Antony Vaccarello, are more familiar than last season’s so-called ‘yeti’ style. The shape in question were chunky platformed black boots with a silver buckle and were worn with little leather shorts and micro-minidresses. While these were the main silhouette to stalk the runway, Vaccarello teased a second (more winter-friendly) style too, a 2018 take on a Peter Pan boot. Like a glammed-up version of Puss in Boots' favourite footwear, these knee-high shoes had fur cuffs and a suede stiletto shape. And, we're pretty certain we'll be seeing a lot of them next winter.
