Saint Laurent’s SS20 Show Makes One Thing Clear: You Need A New Blazer

Tailoring is certainly nothing new for the house of Saint Laurent. Its founder, Yves Saint Laurent, invented the famous 'Le Smoking' tuxedo, adored by the likes of Bianca Jagger and Catherine Deneuve. It was the first high-fashion trouser suit designed specifically for women, which gained notoriety following a series of images shot by famed fashion photographer Helmut Newton.

Yesterday, the French fashion house showcased its SS20 collection in Place de Varsovie at Paris Fashion Week and it was clear that Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello had his predecessor's iconic work in mind.

Supermodels including Kaia Gerber, Liya kebede and, of course, the inimitable Naomi Campbell stormed the catwalk in lots of impressive tailoring. Blazers ranged from the very heavily embellished to boxy double-breasted designs, which looked amazing worn over sheer black shirting.

Embellished

Naomi Campbell closed the show in a head-to-toe sequin trouser suit and Instagram immediately went wild. A sparkling blazer will elevate any evening look and as we (timidly) approach party season, it will become a go-to piece for jazzing up your everyday black-jeans-and-boots combo.

Cropped

A cropped blazer is a good option if you don't want a jacket to totally overtake your look. Wear it open over a pussybow blouse as it was styled on the catwalk.

Double-Breasted

Double-breasted styles are the most effortless of all the blazers. They look best slightly oversized - undone over a T-shirt by day and fastened with next to nothing underneath by night (a silky camisole will do if you're after a little more coverage).

Velvet

Opt for a velvet blazer to add a little texture to your look. It's a classic party season favourite, but it'll look just as good worn over a midi dress for the office.

Belted

Buy into the belted blazer trend to create a shapely silhouette. And don't forget to style it the 'fashion' way by ignoring the buckle and simply knotting the belt slightly off-centre.
