So you thought the slip dress revival had been and gone? Well, think again because Rihanna- along with a host of the designers who recently showed their AW15 collections- is backing these 90s classic slinky silk petticoats as our new go-to dress shape.
Last week, RiRi took to the streets of New York wearing a brown fur coat, emblazoned with tributes to the likes of the Rolling Stones and The Sex Pistols. But the true fashion story in her look was the mini lime green Christopher Kane slip dress which she wore underneath. With its hip-grazing side slit and black lace trim, Rihanna’s choice of slip was about as boudoir as they come. Yet with a pair of white sneakers and that coat, the look comes together as an almost do-able dress-down glam outfit which we could all potentially channel.
And if the recently- finished fashion shows are anything to go by, the slip dress will indeed be back on the fashion agenda into next season. This time, it’s less about those grunge-infused Courtney Love references- although she is arguably still the ultimate slip-dress muse; the mood for AW15 takes bedroom elegance and its origins in 1930s bias-cutting and makes it work for everyday.
Phoebe Philo at Celine admitted that glamour, sexuality and getting dressed-up were all on her mind this season and nowhere was that mood more apparent than in flowing bias-cut slip dresses which contrasted plunging v-necks with elegant midi lengths. At Gucci, Alessandro Michele’s debut collection included beautifully feminine wisps of dresses in delicate lace and pretty botanicals, the twist? Wear with stompy loafers and brogues to nail Michele’s intelligent-chic aesthetic.
In New York came two opposing ways to work the new slip dress- one for day, one for night. At Rodarte, glittery versions came embellished with feathers and styled with sheer tights to create a no-brainer going-out look. Meanwhile, Rag & Bone took a utilitarian slant as satin camis and slips were layered with slim-fitting jersey tees, slim-cut trousers and padded jackets.
The best thing about the slip revival? You could arguably hop straight into bed after a night-out and justify it as a particularly fancy pyjama option.
