Is it a midi? Is it a maxi? No! The skirt length dominating the runways of New York Fashion Week so far is what we’re going to start calling the ‘mixi’. Cut just enough above the ankle to not qualify as a proper maxi but just that wee bit longer to take it out of the midi zone, the mixi is making moves as one of next season’s easiest updates.
Victoria Beckham showcased a series of them – including the one she wore for her catwalk bow (black, asymmetric, clingy) - but we’ve seen them crop up already more than once this week: hemlines were long but not sweeping at Suno, Public School teamed them with chunky flat boots, Dion Lee, like VB, did them in bias-cut satin, as did the design duo at Tome, and even Tibi - whose midi skirts are something of a shop-floor smash - lowered the culottes and skirt-hem lengths to suit this new micro-change.
The trend surely follows on not only from the fashion world’s continued love-in with the midi but also a booming flock of (purposefully) awkward, ankle-swinging pants. Lopped off flares that look like you’ve half grown out of them are de riguer across street style land. These kecks are notoriously tricksy to pull off, but thankfully the mixi provides a kind of initiation. You can move onto the difficult stuff later, for now the mixi skirt looks like a satisfying alternative.
