With New York Fashion Week underway, the broad sidewalks of Manhattan have transformed into a veritable catwalk complete with the sound of yellow cabs honking as the soundtrack. While the autumn winter 19 shows may just be getting started one trend has already been spotted so many times we’re convinced it’s going to catch on.
Each day as the street style pictures come streaming in one thing has become abundantly apparent: editors, influencers and models have a thing for Nanushka’s vegan leather puffer jacket. Regardless of the weather - sunshine or ice - this hip-length padded coat is fast becoming the biggest street style sensation this season. We’ve seen it paired with jeans and hair slides, headbands and polo necks. silk blouses and sunglasses and (in a longer length silhouette) with matching faux leather trousers.
What is vegan leather, you may ask? Since everyone from Wagamama to Gregs have hopped on the vegan food bandwagon the fashion industry has rebranded faux leather as 'vegan'. Previously there was a stigma attached to pleather and PVC, suggesting that in its best iteration it was still sticky and cheap looking. But, vegan leather….it sounds supple and morally sound. The change in name reflects the advances in the quality of this synthetic material over the years. It’s now buttery, not stiff and the tanning process has improved, meaning the faux products look imperceptibly real.
‘Nanushka's fabrics astonish me due to their high quality and finish,’ Lisa Aiken, fashion director at Moda Operandi once told Who What Wear, ‘’I particularly love its amazing vegan leathers that are machine washable at 30 degrees. It's great that there's a practical element there, meaning you can easily invest in a vegan leather shirt, dress or pants, and they're easy to maintain.’
Best bit? The Nanushka jacket street style savants can’t get enough of is still in stock.
