It's official. Love Island fever has swept the nation. Two million of us are watching it, broadsheets are covering it, and Twitter is buzzing about it. Even Liam Gallagher admits he’s a fan of the ITV2 reality show. But perhaps the biggest surprise is that the fashion crowd are getting caught up in the action too. Sure, the metallic bikinis and micro-minis might be better left to sunnier shores and those of a more exhibitionist persuasion (we’re looking at you, Amber), but we’re certainly wearing our hearts on our sleeves... and dresses, shoes and shades.
That’s right, fashion is in the throes of a summer romance, falling head over
heels for heart prints and motifs. Making a compelling alternative to the more predictable florals and polka dots, they’re accenting everything from lazy-day sweatshirts to date-night dresses. If you’re worried it sounds a bit too Clinton Cards-in-February then fear not, even fashion boundary-pushers like Tilda Swinton are embracing their romantic side this season.
Sartorially speaking, the refined environs of the Paris haute couture shows
might be a world away from Love Island’s Mallorcan villa, but the lovey-dovey symbol had its moment at Schiaparelli, where tulle confections were emblazoned with the motif of the moment. Dressed in the label, Olivia Palermo made one of the week’s loveliest FROW statements in a white minidress emblazoned with (do we really need to say it?) a giant heart.
Suppose you’re shy of commitment and only fancy flirting with the trend. Then heart-motif accessories, from clutches to shoes, are your answer. Lolita-esque heart-shaped sunnies and Alessandra Rich’s crystal-embellished belt (spotted on Nicole Kidman and Moda Operandi founder Lauren Santo Domingo) add a kitschy cool to pretty looks that are, well, heart-fluttering.
