Brr it's cold out there! The evenings are drawing in and so it's time to de-hibernate your woolies. But if piling on the layers comes with the fear of looking like an urban yeti, then worry not. We've dissected our favourite layered looks from the street style set to show you how to keep your cold snap looks sleek, chic and streamlined.

Here's our 5 golden rules for layering like a pro.

1. Invest in over-the-knee boots

All those slinky wrap skirts and culottes you bought for summer are still in style, so to take them into winter without catching a chill, a pair of over the knee - or even thigh high boots - are just the thing. Sexier than tights by far and much warmer.

2. Belt up

Cosy knits can be chic - NB. Natasha Goldenbertg's chic pleated skirt and mohair wrap, but what make this look extra chic is the subtle camel-hued waist belt - it breaks up the look and (literally) pulls everything together for a more streamlined silhouette.

3. Mix and match textures

The street style set turned layering on its head at the SS16 shows, teaching us it's all about mixing and matching different textures and lengths. Be playful to follow suit - but the golden rule for this one is to stick to a minimal palette.

4. Double up on outerwear

Your summer jacket isn't off bounds for winter - a denim or leather jacket is a great base for under a long trench when the cold really hits home.

5. A blanket cape is your winter BFF

When you want to stay warm without swamping your entire outfit, a classic cape is your go-to. You'll still be able to juggle your clutch underneath and show off ywhat's underneath.
