There was no beating around the proverbial bush when it came to H&M making a momentous fashion landing during Paris Fashion Week once again with their Studio line. Giant space pods planted onto moon-like floors and walls in the city's eternally impressive Grand Palais were just the start of this intergalactic fashion mission for autumn/winter 2015. Here’s what we enjoyed the most…
1. The Spaced Out Setting
From strobe lighting to the occasional loud and reverberating rumble to make you feel like aliens may be invading, no piece of moonrock was left unturned, so to speak. A little robo-camera that darted around the runway provided the final flourish before a genuine galaxy-riding trooper descended…
2. Superstar DJ
Kicking off the adventure was Caroline de Maigret in a silver catsuit and boots, complete with helmet and a large remote control. What was she controlling? The music! The French style icon stepped into her futuristic DJ booth and spun some suitably trippy and kitsch tunes (Bowie was of course essential). We were half expecting a model version of Austin Powers to teleport in as her sidekick...
3. The Stellar Line Up
Alas no Mr Powers, but from new supers like Liu Wen and Devon Windsor through to hot-ticket newbies like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, H&M's model casting was out of this world. Edie Campbell presented yet another hair colour this fashion week – we’re looking at strawberry blonde now – and every one of these girls hit the runway with smiles from ear-to-ear.
4. The Fantastic FROW
It was cool chicks a-go-go for Studio: Solange Knowles, Karolina Kurkova, Noomi Rapace, Erin O’Connor, Sophie Ritchie, Josephine de la Baume - and equally cool, but not a chick, her husband Mark Ronson.
5. The Retro Scandi Vibes
Rather than all-out haute astronaut, head of design, Ann-Sofie Johansson, wisely used the idea as a launch pad rather than a literal fashion swipe. The overall effect had a disco-ready 1970s flavour – skinny satin flares, roll-necks a plenty, glimmering lurex zig zags darting here and there, retro ski-gear like salopettes and moon-boots updated into sleeker, more day-friendly versions, and mini tunics layered over long trousers (something that the brand is already acing in store right now and is highlighted as a key look for Ann-Sofie). ‘There’s great outerwear, but there’s also a little bit of glamour in there…’ Johansson explained backstage, ‘I think you always want to have a bit of glamour, but we also wanted this collection to be tomboyish and cool and feel effortless. I think you get that feeling of something more street-y and sporty as well as feminine.’
