Katy Perry, Jessica Chastain, Amanda Seyfried, and Kim and Kanye made for quite possibly the season’s most star-studded front row to date at the Givenchy show in Paris last night. It is ten years to the season since Riccardo Tisci took to the helm of this famed French label and he has transformed it into one of the French capital’s hottest tickets. In particular, he is beloved by the more discerning red carpet star and was – famously –responsible for KK’s wedding dress.
None of his gang of friends was likely to be disappointed by the extraordinary show that came down the long, winding runway on this occasion. A ‘Victorian chola girl’ was the order of the day for the forthcoming autumn, according to the show notes. The former was clearly referenced in the most exquisite black chiffon and velvet dresses that it is possible to imagine. The latter was the inspiration behind face jewellery – think nose rings and heavy metal tears – and kiss curls gelled to models’ temples.
M Tisci is by no means been the only person to have looked at Victoriana over the past month. This was the finest display of that so far, however. Given that he is a designer who has long been wedded to what he himself describes as a ‘dark’ and ‘gothic’ aesthetic, it is a period he understands well. The smocking, delicate ruffles, frills, pleats and pin-tucking decorating the surfaces of the aforementioned pieces were testimony to that and to the sublime skills of the Givenchy ateliers also. Tailoring, meanwhile – long, lean and edged with blood red piping – was equally accomplished.
As the proceedings continued, looks became increasingly ornate culminating in a series of sinuous, full-length gowns. Any one of M Tisci’s aforementioned cohorts will be more than happy to wear them and they are likely to upstage all around them when they do so.
