The Stars Give Gingham The Green Light

Ah, gingham – what a comforting sight. Reminiscent of picnic rugs, french tablecloths, tea towels and jam, it spells out summer, and also style – iconic style: Audrey wore it, Marilyn wore it, Liz T and Jackie O too.

This season, gingham is having a moment. And it's all thanks to designers Diane von Furstenberg, Oscar de la Renta and Altuzarra, who featured the print in their SS15 collections.

By steering the fabric away from associations of innocence (Dorothy pinafores – begone!) their modern cuts have given it an altogether more daring appeal, throwing it into the fashion fore and putting it back on the map.

How did they do this? Well, take DvF's Celeste gingham silk jersey wrap romper. Whilst it modestly covers an ample bosom, it is also sexily (and sassily) short...

Altuzarra, similarly, brought out a figure-hugging high-waisted gingham skirt which features an unbuttonable slit up the front, and whilst Oscar de la Renta may have returned to mid-century silhouettes with the gingham wool-blend pencil skirt, its matching garment is none other than a flesh-revealing gingham cropped top.

In recent weeks, countless stars have taken to the trend, showcasing the fabric's versatility. Anna Wintour, for instance, wore the same crinkled gingham dress (yes, twice - shock horror) to this year's Men's Wimbledon Finals and the Jean-Paul Gaultier Couture Show in Paris. Georgie May Jagger dressed up with a pair of Dolce & Gabbana gingham brocade T-bar pumps in Berlin, whilst Daisy Lowe dressed down in a vintage red gingham maxi dress to Glastonbury.

Be it Lisa Marie Fernandez's Poppy gingham seersucker bandeau swimsuit, Lela Rose's gingham jacquard midi dress or Richard Nicoll's lycra gingham jumpsuit, gingham is everywhere.
