The Zara dress (as if you don't know which one we're talking about) has gone viral, or whatever the real life version of viral is. If you don't own it, you know someone who does. But the problem is, it's become a bit of a joke. If you wear it, people will notice. And not in a 'omg I love her dress' way.
We're all trying to buy less and wear our clothes more, so instead of binning the dress and pretending that you never owned a piece of Fashion History, why not customise it so it's something completely different?
Dye It
The simplest possible way to make the Zara dress look less like The Zara Dress is to dye it. Instagrammers have been doing exactly that, with some pretty impressive results.
We'd recommend going for a bright if you're keen to keep the summer vibe going, but if you've already got one eye on the winter then why not go for a grey or mid-blue which would work with ankle boots and a leather jacket.
Cut It
Another way to make your dress look less like the 150,00000 sold (not technically the number sold) is to cut it. Or rather, unless you're good at sewing, to pay someone else to cut it.
Either you could remove the bottom panel of fabric and make it knee length, or you could take the sleeves off and make it into a high necked sleeveless dress which is super cute for the rest of the summer season. Let's face it, while the fashion industry is thinking about autumn, half of us haven't even had our holidays yet.
Without sleeves it would be a similar shape to this very popular Topshop number.
Shrink It
This is a dicey option, so don't blame us if it goes wrong. But you could stick it on a hot wash and see what happens. Like a sort of laundry Russian Roulette.
Style It
If you don't want to cut or dye your dress, but you do want to wear it without ending up on one of the Instagram accounts dedicated to The Dress, then you're best off styling it differently. The most standard look on the streets seems to be to wear it with trainers or Converse and a leather or denim jacket.
You could try belting it to change the silhouette, or try it with an oversized jumper (when it gets a bit colder).
Wear It Backwards
The dress has a little button at the back, so if you turn it around it does actually look quite different.
Put It Away
Right now it's the it dress, but we're all pretty bad about getting rid of fast fashion, so in a few months lots of people will have ditched the dress, and you'll be safe to wear it in public without ending up on the Hot4TheSpot Instagram page.
Stop Caring
It's a nice dress guys. It's okay that ever second woman in the UK owns it (not technically true).
