UGG Australia is known for excellent - often super-comfy - footwear so it was only a matter of time before the boots would be stomping the catwalks. Step forward Christopher Raeburn, the first designer to bring the brand to London Fashion Week.
The partnership follows in the footsteps of UGG's alliance with design duo Agi & Sam for London Collections: Men, but this collab is a perfect fit with Raeburn’s approach. The designer's Autumn Winter 2015 collection, which showed at Somerset House, re-appropriated military fabrics and outerwear created from de-commissioned parachutes and rafts.
Each look was topped off with a pair of UGGs from the new ‘SoCal’ collection. The boots mixed femininity with functionality, featuring a slight wedge and snapping straps while that signature comfiness was still firmly in tact.
It's further proof of UGG's versatility so we were excited to get a closer look backstage after the show. We asked the man himself to talk us through the collection and his passion for sustainable fashion...
Grazia Daily: Tell us about the inspiration for this season.
Christopher Raeburn: Well, the sea is definitely in this season! The original concept came from our Remade idea because the orange garments you see here are all made from original life-rafts. So we take the life-raft and completely deconstruct it, then re-work it into the pieces, which is why you see all the original branding. We make sure it fits with the rest of the collection so we use the same reflectors and seaming that you see on other pieces.
Grazia Daily: Is it quite a challenge to work with that sort of raw material?
**Christopher Raeburn: **It is, but for me, it’s not about buying a roll of fabric and working from there. I love the fact that you work with material that already existed as something else, which helps dictate how the piece will end up. It brings a real authenticity to the product. So while it’s important to have the functionality, it's also about bringing in femininity too, so I use belts to really cinch in the coats and make that amazing womanly silhouette.
****Grazia Daily: It also means each piece is very unique.
**Christopher Raeburn: **Yes, each piece is very different. We make all of these pieces in a studio and limit them to 50 pieces worldwide so they are really special. For example, one jacket is made from an original Swedish military fabric so it’s about 70 years old.
****Grazia Daily: Wow. And tell us about the footwear...
**Christopher Raeburn: **Again it's about that femininity and functionality. The UGGs work so well - and are so warm! It's been a really natural partnership so it's great to see everything working together. It's also a real mark for London Fashion Week.
Grazia Daily: The show felt like it was set at the seaside - do you spend a lot of time by the sea?
**Christopher Raeburn: **I wish I could! But no, I just wanted to put people into an experience and bring everything back to the soundtrack, which was sea inspired. I love to be able to take people somewhere else.
