She's with the band. Or she's in the band. Or she's on the band's vinyl sleeve. Either way, Francisco Costa's girl for Calvin Klein'A/W'15 is hip, riche, hangs out with the it crowd and is only kitted out in the finest rock'n'roll gear - but not how we've come to know it. No matter what time of day, how long she's been awake or what country she's in, she'll look posh and polished. She's electric. Think Mick Jagger's most stylish girlfriends' wardrobes - mod-ish mini dresses worn with leather boots, maxi crochet dresses sans lingerie, patchworked suede coats, 60s futuristic shift dresses, swingy culottes suits in autumnal - and eternally retro - shades. Plum, chocolate, shiny shiny black, pillar box red, loden green, biscuit and silver... The Calvin girl's repertoire is extensive but it could just as easily be taken apart, thrown into a weekend bag for when that last minute gig comes up and she has to the hit the road at midnight, and still work in harmony.
The reason why Francisco really nailed this collection is because in the face of many retro references it was clear to see in person that with hi tech fabrications and super luxurious finishes his looking back was in no way looking vintage. The designer has often mentioned that this is the most important factor in creating modern day luxury - cheaper labels can copy silhouette or print but they could never craft the intricate crochet/chain-mail seen in slinky maxi dresses today. Or the perfectly striped - not random - patchwork. Or the lurex ribbed skinny knitted dresses that clung to the body in a flattering rather than in an unforgiving way. Or the brilliantly well-cut ankle swingers that featured gigantic eyelets for hem decoration.
This was a play in mini versus maxi - where there was a mini skirt you'd have maxi leather boots that stretched way beyond the upper thigh. Where you'd have a big maxi coat, mini heels. The proportions were bang on every time - making this a maximum success. And we're certain that the chicest muso on the FROW - Sienna Miller - will wear it very well.
