With the dust settling on New York Fashion Week for another season, and an army of deeply jet-lagged editors making their way to the first few London shows today, we thought it was a high time for a recce of the best beauty looks we saw. As the perpetual grey weather begins to lift, the new season is inching ever closer to us, so what better time to try a new trend? There were a few breakout hits that are sure to filter down to the stylish ladies you clock out and about, so we decided to help you get ahead of the curve with our five hot tips to try today.

1. Join The Pony Club

This season, Orlando Pita was THE most in-demand hair stylist. His incredible work at Carolina Herrera and Derek Lam (amongst other big name brands) was characterised not only by the chic looks he created, but his unwavering commitment to the job. Case in point? He stayed up all night to hand-make the gorgeous leather ponytail clasps the girls wore at the Derek Lam show. Equally lovely were his wraps on the models' hair at Carolina Herrera. Time to jazz up your failsafe favourite 'do.

2. The Accent Nail

Look, we're not saying you CAN'T wear a nude nail, we're just saying this season's nude nail has some kind of extra pizzazz to it. No, you won't need surgical dexterity or several pots of glitter - just a contrasting polish or two, and perhaps the odd gem. Nails at Cushnie et Ochs's presentation were a single bold colour, with a square of an opposing primary shade set in the centre, while Erin Fetherston's manicure was beige with a single rose gold cross on the ring finger. Less is more.

3. Get Frosted

Wet look isn't just for your hair - this season, we saw a host of glossy-yet-opaque pouts and eyelids that looked delightfully frosty. Embrace your inner Snow Queen like at Donna Karen with just-bitten in colour, yet sheeny in finish lips, or channel Alexander Wang's glossy lids for an effortlessly cool look. The secret? Blending the tiniest bit of concealer with your gloss to get the desirerd opacity.

4. Mixed Mediums

While we're on wet-look, fashion's favourite texture just got an upgrade. This season's girl isn't fresh out the shower - she just got caught in the rain. Misted lengths at Creatures of The Wind and Marc Jacobs (think softly scrunched matte waves, teased flyaways ends) and damp roots (never wet) gave a wet and dry finish like a light April's shower. Perfect for a romantic finish.

5. Lady In Red

Red lips never go out of style, but this season is got a reboot. Embrace pillarbox red and deep scarlets like 3.1 Philip Lim's girl - the shade du jour is bold and beautiful. Perfect for transitional beauty, red carries all the drama of winter with the colour injection of spring and summer. Blot a deep, intense lipstick or opt for a tinted balm, applied with a heavy hand, if you're not feeling so brave.
