Asymmetric hems may have ruled the runway last year but designers are taking ‘weird and wonky’ one step further this season. Seams are getting, well… strange. Ruched drop waists at Roksanda and billowing, skew-whiff babydoll dresses at Cecilie Bahnsen make a strong case for switching up your silhouette, starting now. At Ganni, dresses and tops were sporadically tacked at the elbow, hip and neck, which resulted in fresh, flattering shapes from the beloved Scandi-brand.
Richard Malone took the look to a whole new level at his spring/summer 2020 show in London last weekend with an array of poncho-style frocks in shades of peppermint and burgundy that seemed to defy gravity entirely, while Riccardo Tisci offered a more wearable take on the trend at Burberry – a beautiful sky blue puffed-sleeved number.
Fortunately, the trend has begun to filter through to the shop floor already and you don’t have to wait for the new collections to drop before you shop. Georgia Hardinge, a designer we’ve previously featured in Lunchtime Shop, is responsible for the ‘Elena’ dress, that goes in and out in all the wrong (but, actually, oh-so-right) places - the fitted bodice and puffed sleeves will help balance proportions. If you’re after a slightly more demure take on the trend, try Zara’s tiered black midi dress. It’s a classic chuck-on-and-go style that we’ve come to rely on daily, and can be dressed up or down at a moment’s notice. Our Shopping Editor Sophie Henderson was spotted wearing this very piece at Grazia HQ only yesterday, so you'll know you're in good company.
