A-Z Fashion Glossary: The Fashion Buzzwords Of 2013 From Cuffs To Sliders
A-Z
A is for arms out
From Victoria Beckham's sleeveless coats to Topshop's armless tees, 2013 saw the death of the sleeve as, rain or shine, we got our guns out.
B is for bondage
Blame the Fifty Shades hangover, but spring saw us dabbling in leather and laced- up fetish-wear. Mainly on our feet (hi, Acne!), but still.
C is for cuffs
Elaborate clip-on ear decorations, as seen on Emma Watson, were 2013's least expected accessory trend. Any excuse to channel 1997.
D is for dusty pink
Specifically, that dusty-pink coat from M&S. It spawned a million copies but also made us afraid to sit on public transport.
E is for earrings
They were decidedly huge and either hooped (like Rihanna’s) or decadently chandelier.
F is for fluted skirts
Like a pencil skirt but updated with a little ’40s-style kick. See Peter Pilotto and Preen. Flattering, yes, but also 10 times easier to walk in, too.

L is for lemon
A firm favourite at Mulberry and Calvin Klein but not an easy shade to pull off. Explains why we wore it on our nails, then. See Butter London’s best- selling Jasper.
M is for monochrome
From Vuitton’s checks to Zara’s skirts, last spring if you wore black, you also wore white.
N is for navel gazing
from sidebums to underboobs, the red carpet was awash with flesh. Luckily, the only trend to make it to the high street was the navel. Now, where's our gym membership?
O is for oversize
Much like a Friday- night McDonald’s, we supersized everything. From Annie Hall trousers to COS coats 11 sizes too big, the bigger the better.
P is for patent
Dior’s patent two-tone heels were a good starting point for the fashionistas. For everyone else, there were patent creepers and macs from American Apparel.
Q is for quality
This year Burberry sales reached £1bn, luxury group LVMH bought JW Anderson and everyone went berserk for the not- that-affordable Isabel Marant for H&M.
R is for Russia
April’s Moscow Fashion Week suggested that their designers – from BEssARION (the Alexander Wang of Russia) to DKNY-y Dasha Gauser – was on the rise.
A-Z 20
Céline pool sliders with a Nike sock. Birkenstocks with a Tabio pop sock. The possibilities were endless for one of the year’s most divisive trends.
A-Z 21
If monochrome was spring’s print, tartan was autumn’s. 3.1 Phillip Lim, Céline, Topshop... We could go on but won’t.
U is for urban
Blame Cara, but unless you flexed an Obey beanie, American Apparel hoodie and Whistles camo bomber this year, then you were DTM. (Oh please, look it up).
V is for Victoria's Secret
Whose show was bigger than ever thanks to the most expensive bra (a cool $10 million), Cara walking mainline and British girlband Neon Jungle taking to the catwalk.
W is for white
which came in many forms, although personal favourites include lace at Valentino, sheer at Topshop and folds at Prada. A purist's dream.
X is for x-ray
Skeleton motifs were a strong contender for alt trend of 2013. We liked Jena Theo’s bone-print sweaters for post-Halloween bone-thuggery (jenatheo.com).
Y is for yours
Call it the Middleton effect (both sisters), but bespoke fashion, in the vein of up-and- coming designers like Katherine Hooker and Emilia Wickstead, proliferated on the red carpet...
Z is for zebra print
because Katie Grand covered her Hogan collection with it and because it looked ace at Joseph.
Before we get stuck in the 2014 trends, let's take a look back at the fashion buzzwords from the last 12 months, shall we?! Trend-wise 2013 was all about monochrome, tartan, pink coats and cuffs.
