Autumn is a season in flux, some days come with a wintery chill in the air and others still cling onto summer’s sunshine, making getting dressed rather tricky at times. But, as we wave goodbye to light evenings and even lighter jackets, it’s time to get excited for big coats, cosy knits and all things autumnal. Thankfully, the new autumn collection by high-street hero Marks & Spencer has now landed in store - and with it comes a whole host of great new items to add to your wardrobe.

As a shopping editor, I spend a lot of my time looking at clothes (a tough gig, I know) making it all the more exciting when a new collection arrives. And whilst I love a little online browse, nothing beats seeing clothes in real life, trying things on to find the right fit or spotting things that I might’ve scrolled past. It’s key to look for items you know will work with things you already own, a crew-knit cardigan, for example, is always useful, either worn over vest tops as an added layer or on its own as a button-down jumper.

From the sell-out drawstring jeans to those easy-to-weardresses that come to the rescue when you’ve no idea what to put on in the morning, I know I can always rely on Marks & Spencer to come up with the goods. I headed into store to see the new collection and find the best new bits to add to your wardrobe...

Leopard-print jeans are having a moment, as easy to wear as your usual blue denim but with added spice. The wide leg and high waist give a really flattering silhouette. Wear with a crew-neck cardigan and ballet flats for a seriously stylish outfit. This pair in question come in petite, regular and long lengths in sizes UK8 - UK20 so you can find your perfect fit.

The M&S bag collection is one of the best on the high street. This shoulder bag comes in three shades (black, dark brown and chartreuse green) and is as good as any designer bag. For 2024, switch out classic black in favour of chocolate brown - one of the biggest trends for 2024.

I love this M&S cardigan; it feels super soft and expensive. The added details on the collar gives the impression it's layered over another top without wearing anything underneath, a handy styling hack. I'll be wearing this buttoned up as a top with leopard jeans all autumn.

Available in cream and beige, this cardigan can be worn either as a cardi or a jacket and the gold button detail gives the impression of a boucle jacket with all the comfort of knitwear - ideal. Available in XS to XL, I'd recommend sizing up so you can easily layer over shirts or fine knits.

One of the biggest trends for autumn? Boho of course. Give a '70s spin to denim jeans and try a flare cut (always flattering, too) with patch pockets. I'll be wear with suede accessories for a real boho vibe.

Not ready to get your 'big coat' out just yet? Me neither. Instead try a short peacoat to carry on the '70s trend. Pair this style over knitted dresses and boots or with indigo denim, loafers and dark sunglasses for an effortlessly cool outfit.

Already one of 2024's biggest trends, the humble rugby shirt is the perfect outfit solution when you're getting ready in a rush. Update your office wardrobe and pair a rugby shirt with tailored trousers instead of cotton shirts.

Studded ballet flats have been a fashion favourite for a long time now and they're going nowhere fast. If, like me, you struggle with what shoes to wear in this tricky in-between-the-seasons time of year, embellished leather ballet flats are the answer.

All hail the trench coat. A great trench is a wardrobe staple but this checked wool version is going straight on my wish list. Light enough to wear in autumn but warm enough to wear throughout winter, this coat will see you straight through the season and far beyond.
