A trend has emerged at New York Fashion Week that might prove divisive. Divisive, in fact, is the operative word because it’s been all about bi-coloured accessories in the Big Apple. According to global search platform Lyst, searches for ‘two-tone’ have increased by 30% since the beginning of fashion month, with boots in contrasting shades proving particularly hot on the street-style circuit.
The influencer Swantje Sömmer wore a cream and black pair at Copenhagen Fashion Week, while Tamu McPherson took things a step further in New York, with tri-coloured knee-highs in cheerful stripes of white, red and black. Anine Bing has a ankle boots (in wearable shades of toffee and black), while Zara’s mustard and black block-heeled style will add an instant flash of colour right at your outfit’s finale.
And it doesn’t stop at boots. Everything from bags (The Volon’s clutch in caramel and pumpkin gets our vote) to knit dresses (Joseph’s ticks all the right boxes) now has split-personality syndrome when it comes to colours.
When it comes to styling, it couldn’t be more straightforward. You can either stick to neutrals, wearing goes-with-everything shades like khaki or perhaps denim, or coordinate your outfit accordingly. Pernille Teisbaek, the Danish super-influencer who was first off the block with the two-tone trend back in September, paired her brown-and-black leather coat with a polo neck, bag, boots and trousers that looked like they’d be exactly colour-matched.
The best news of all? The bi-colour trend couldn’t be better if you’re an indecisive dresser.
