Diamonds are to the Oscars what hearts are to Valentine's Day: nothing new, slightly overdone but still quite nice nonetheless. Of course, you expect to see some blinding sparklers on the red carpet but this year, the diamonds were more specific than usual. They formed an array of pieces that can only be described as statement necklaces. That's right, the mid-noughties called – it wants to tell you that its favourite accessory is once again relevant.
There was – take a deep breath – Zazie Beetz, Kaitlyn Dever, Mindy Kaling, Greta Gerwig, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Florence Pugh, Rebel Wilson and Idina Menzel, all of whom made their necklaces a focal point of their ensembles.
Even Janelle Monae wore one, which could just about be seen under her Ralph Lauren hooded gown.
Mindy Kaling's statement necklace even came with its own security team, given that her jewellery was worth a whopping half a million dollars, while Billy Porter sported sustainable diamonds during his performance alongside Janelle Monae at the beginning of the ceremony.
This forced me to reconsider an accessory that has, until now, been somewhat written off. While it was a mainstay of wardrobes everywhere circa 2004, it's been neglected of late. And yet, it has genuinely transformative powers. Consider, for example, waking up to see that storm Chiara is still raging. All you want to wear is jeans and a cosy jumper but you still want to look like you've made an effort. Well, I think you can see where I'm going with this...
So, in honour of the accessories at the Oscars, here are some of the best statement necklaces to buy now, keep forever and wear with everything from white T-shirts to ballgowns.
