It’s official, the new-in sections are bursting with optimistic brights and summer silhouettes. As the promise of scorching sunshine and blue skies start to become more consistent, it’s time to pack away AW19 – spring/summer 20 is now in full swing. Even if it's just in your back garden or local park.
No need to buy a whole new wardrobe, though. SS20’s message isn’t about shopping a conveyer belt of must-have trends. Instead, it’s looking to pieces you already own and making clever purchases that make them feel new. We’ve scoured the catwalks to find the pieces that really shape the season ahead and, the great news is, you probably have one or more of these already in your wardrobe. And if you don't, treat yourself.
City Shorts
Autumn/Winter's culottes have been traded out for summer city shorts. Ideal in crisp cotton or breathable linen. Pair with chunky biker boots or minimal sandals and loose shirts.
Bright Dresses
Frog green, tomato red, banana yellow and flamingo pink were just some of the mood-boosting brights splattered across the SS20 shows.
Flares
Oh yes, they're back. So long skinnies, it's time to widen your horizons. Consummate proof they're a 'thing'? Hedi Slimane put them on the Celine catwalk a whopping 23 times. The perfect pairings? Fringed suede jackets, chevron knitwear and oversized sunnies, of course.
XXL Handbags
Over to handbags and bigger really is better for 2020. As our list of everyday essentials continues to develop, count this as your modern day ode to Mary Poppins. Just remember, super-sized doesn't have to mean super-stuffed (unless you know a good osteopath).
1970's Paisley
Perhaps considered to be more autumnal, Saint Laurent reinvented it for the sunny season. From evening tops and suits to summer skirts, it's not where you wear it but how. Look to the Saint Laurent catwalk for styling notes on making paisley punk rock rather than prissy.
Square Toe Shoes
They're by no means new so if you already own these, gold star for you. Loved AW19's square toe boot? Say hello to the square toe sandal and mule.
