IRL, it’s not quite spring. In the world of fashion however, we are heralding in a new season. With this comes a flurry of shiny new things on every shop floor. And so the temptation to give our wardrobes a top-to-toe overhaul, maxing out every credit card in the process, is all too real.
But here’s the thing; right now, the trick to actually looking on point in this transitionary period is not about a complete, spendthrift inspired style revamp. Instead, it’s all about that one thing. THE ELEVATOR.
As any streetstyler worth their salts will tell you, a single, well-judged piece will immediately, quite magically, lift your entire look.
A brightly coloured puffa jacket is a one-stop shop upgrade; the bigger, the puffier, the better because, thankfully, the catwalks have killed off any Michelin Man/15 tog duvet connotations. If you prefer to make a more understated statement, simply accessorise. This is the season of the earring; shoulder grazing tassels, architectural cuts, 90’s style hoops… whatever you do, just make it count. The once tricky-to-wear white shoe is now a directional classic that, yes, you can actually wear with anything, Gucci’s double-G belt, a nod to our newly revived love for logos will upgrade anything from a chic black dress to a lived-in pair of jeans.
The ultimate elevator this season is arguably Dior’s J’ADIOR slingbacks; never has a kitten heel elicited such covetousness. An elevator, however, needn’t cost a month’s rent. In homage to Gucci, we are all now wearing socks with our open toe shoes. So ignore the urge to splurge; for now at least, it’s all about the power of one.
