We're utterly obsessed with the snakeskin boots in Queen & Slim. The mid-calf style by Brother Vellies – the sustainable accessories brand that’s a favourite of Zendaya, Hailey Baldwin and Tessa Thompson, which has African craftsmanship at its core – was worn by Beyoncé at a Queen & Slim screening last year and made an immediate impact on shoppers.
According to global search platform Lyst, searches for the brand are up 61% since November, with the snake-print Palms boot registering as one of the most searched for items. It’s not hard to see why. ‘With a close-to-calf silhouette and slim heel, the Palms boot is symbolic of Queen stepping into a transformational role that is undeniably sexy,’ says the film's costume designer Shiona Turini.
And if you think a snake-print boot surely has a short lifespan, think again. 'The Palms boot is a staple of what Brother Vellies is as a brand,' says founder Aurora James. 'It is a style that we have carried over for years and a pair of boots that will never go out of style.'
Of course, footwear is just the first frontier of snakeskin. The street-stylers at Copenhagen Fashion Week wore trousers, dresses and even coats that came covered in scales – and the print is surprisingly easy to pull off.
Whatever you choose, it will pay to keep the rest of your outfit pared-back. You could tuck a cream polo neck under French Connection’s patchwork mac or wear Weekday’s dress with a faux-shearling coat and black stomper boots. Having said that, Queen clashed hers with a zebra-striped dress, and Rihanna wears the stuff head-to-toe. So, maybe the snakeskin rules are: there are no rules.
