Marissa Cooper’s OC Wardrobe Is Basically The Biggest Thing In Fashion Right Now

2005 called – it wants to rule your wardrobe

The SS20 catwalks may have taken us all back to the 1970s but on the street style circuit (and even the Oscars red carpet) a resurgence of a different kind is taking shape. It involves a number of trends that last enjoyed such heady success circa. 2005, when we all lived happily in a pre-Instagram world, clothed in chunky jewellery, denim mini skirts and generally whatever Marissa Cooperwas wearing on The OC. Such jewellery joins – wait for it – platform shoes and shoulder bags (hi Marissa!) as the mid-noughties fashion phenomena staging a comeback.

‘The 90s have been done to death, so it’s time to move onto the millennium,’ says Susie Lau. Indeed, the street style circuit has embraced these mid-noughties trends, with Lyst reporting that, thanks to the recent show-goers at New York Fashion Week, searches for chunky necklaces and ‘Croissant’ shoulder bags are up by 20% and 10% respectively. Marissa would be proud.

The Statement Necklace

Statement necklaces are to me what madeleines were for Proust: a way to conjure involuntary memories long buried in my psyche. The memories in question belong exclusively to the mid-noughties but, thanks in part to the return of the chunky chain necklace courtesy of Bottega Veneta, we’re now seeing a new wave of bold, brash necklaces. These include Prada’s layers of sea shells and Dior’s beaded chokers. And during Copenhagen Fashion Week, some of the coolest girls wore giant pearls layered over knitwear.

The Shoulder Bag

Following the prevalence of shoulder bags on the street stylers of New York, Lyst reports that its trending brands in this category are Bottega Veneta, Lemaire and Staud. And Elizabeth von der Goltz, Global Buying Director at Net-a-Porter, said they have over 50 styles of shoulder bags dropping for spring.

The Platform Shoes

There’s the 70s-style platforms being championed by Chloe and Miu Miu for SS20, and then there’s the noughties platforms as seen at Tibi, on street stylers and even on Regina King and Billy Porter (in custom Jimmy Choos, no less) at the Oscars. Wear your own stacked heels with opaque tights now – you get extra points if you’re brave enough to opt for a clog-style shoe. More wearable than it sounds, we promise.

The Bootcut Jeans

Banish all thoughts of the way you wore bootcut jeans back in 2005 – the new way to wear them is with a slim, trim blazer and equally streamlined button-down shirt. Much chicer – we’re sure you’ll agree – than the bandeau tops of yore.
