It is possible that you’ve read the words ‘midi slip skirt’ almost as many times as you’ve read your own name in the last few months. Ok, so that may be a slight exaggeration but I’m under no impression that the tidings I bring to you here qualify, in any way, as new information. But the thing is, when a major fashion trend is as practical, affordable and – crucially, for it’s not always the case – wearable, it really is worth banging the drum for as long as possible. So, here I am, banging the drum of the midi slip skirt, which is not dead. In fact, it’s very much alive.
Remember that Réalisation Par skirt? The leopard print one that kept selling out before you had a chance to add it to your virtual basket? Well, it’s back, and it is currently in stock in ALL SIZES. If you’re still here (and not already entering your card details), you might be interested to know it’s also all over the ‘Gram again. Perhaps it’s something to do with the fact that, in the UK alone, over 1000 searches are being made for ‘slip skirt’ every month. Of course, the Réalisation number sparked a slip skirt renaissance on a massive scale, with all of the high street jumping firmly onto the bandwagon, releasing their own versions of the 90s midi.
Topshop, for one, saw huge success with its array of satin skirts, available in all manner of colours and prints. The first drop sold out within just three hours online, and there are now over 20 different styles on offer. ASOS, too, has sold over 25,000 bias-cut midi skirts, with new styles including lace panels, classic navy and even on-trend cow prints.
Elsewhere, there are excellent midis to be found at & Other Stories, M&S, Boden and New Look. If you’re looking for more of an investment buy, look to brands like Raey, Nanushka and Bec + Bridge, all of whom can be spotted on Instagram’s most stylish.
Personally, I have four slip skirts and, while that may sound excessive, I can assure you they’ve revolutionised my daily wardrobe. Whether worn with jumpers, tights and boots or a fancy top, kitten heels and jazzy accessories, they just work for everything. Most of all, they’re comfortable. Since simply deciding what to wear can often feel like a bit of a slog every day, it doesn’t look like I’ll stop banging the aforementioned drum any time soon. Join me: you really will thank me.
