Sometimes, it's difficult to see a fashion trend coming. They can be so left-field that they appear seemingly from nowhere and seem to confuse even the most loyal of trend watchers. Other times, there are trends which are slow burners; which start picking up speed gradually, only to become prolific on the fashion scene for seasons to come. This is exactly what's happened with puff sleeves, which have quickly become so much more than a passing fad.
What started with a few dresses, tops and the like has now become widespread. From Simone Rocha and Molly Goddard to Ganni and Cecilie Bahnsen, summer proved that the ultimate silhouette, no matter your age or size, is one that's oversized, preferably with puff sleeves.
There's also theinfluence of the upcomingLittle Womenfilm, which has ensured the prairie trend still has a firm presence (and also vindicates my own wardrobe) and therecent furore over the phrase 'Big Girl's Blouse'which I have reclaimed as it is, quite frankly, a compliment – particularly when boasting puff sleeves.
If you thought this was just a summer fling, however, you'd be wrong. The last month has seen New York, London, Milan and Paris play host to the new spring/summer 2020 collections, giving us all a glimpse at next year's trends. And guess what was a prominent feature in every city?
From Khaite, Brock Collection and Mara Hoffman in New York – via Simone Rocha and Rejina Pyo in London – right through to the drama of Alexander McQueen in Paris just this week, a puff sleeve was present and correct in every fashion capital (on and off the catwalk), cementing its reign.
