First it was pleated skirts, then it was patent loafers. Now there’s another item the fashion pack is borrowing from the prepster’s wardrobe - a polo jumper. To be clear, this is not a polo neck and is (definitely) not the kind of polo shirt your dad might wear to hit the golf course. It’s simply a jumper with a collar, often made from soft ribbed knit, and needs to be buttoned to the top to get an A* in the prim department.
We have Prada’s spring/summer show to thank for the latest piece of the preppy puzzle. Its polo jumpers were collared (and ever-so-slightly elongated), ribbed and tucked into gently flaring pencil skirts. Styled with bare legs, chunky mules and sequined top-handle totes, it was what a grown-up Blair Waldorf would be wearing circa 2020, and struck just the right balance between looking butter-wouldn’t-melt and quietly sexy.

The high street has plenty of polo jumpers to choose from. I got Other Stories’s collared and mint green ribbed sweater for Christmas - and have to say it’s been the perfect pick-me-up this January. Its slightly more slouchy alpaca-blend sweater in goes-with-anything grey, meanwhile, is the just the thing for tucking into slouchy jeans.
When it comes to styling, try a pair of high-waisted trousers or a slim-waisted pencil skirt a la Prada with your polo jumper. And while Blair wouldn’t agree, perhaps leave the Alice band at home.
