The Duchess of Cambridge wore it for a D-Day exhibition. So did Alexa Chung and Jorja Smith at this week’s Royal Academy summer party. The high street is full of the stuff, it’s super jolly for summer, and it smacks of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. We’re talking, of course, about the polka dot print.
The internet had a near-meltdown over Kate Middleton’s collared Alessandra Rich dress. It was exactly the same navy-and-white style that the actress Abigail Spencer chose for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding last year and Kate, ever the outfit recycler, has already worn it twice. It might be too early to call it, but it's already won the award for the ultimate summer dress for 2019 in our books. And it’s only the beginning of June.
Alexa Chung’s, meanwhile, was Dolly Up Vintage - the thigh-high split and sheer lace panel made sure it didn’t read as ‘Sloane Ranger’ - while Jorja Smith wore a spotted duster coat and matching skirt by 16 Arlington. But don’t think the print has to be black, navy or white.
For starters, nothing will cheer you up faster than Uterque’s lime-spotted linen dress if the weather’s not exactly playing ball. And how about this peacock-blue, prettily-ruffled skirt by Whistles? Like we said, super jolly.
The rules to live by are as follows. Only wear one size of spot per outfit; keep your accessories pared-back if possible (straw baskets bags, espadrilles, you know the drill), and don’t be afraid to try brown. It worked for Julia Roberts, after all.
