If there’s anything an ‘it girl’ loves the most, it’s a natty slogan T-shirt. From Britney’s infamous ‘Dump Him’ baby tee of the early ‘00s to Winona Ryder wearing her ‘Free Winona’ t-shirt in 2002 (cementing her as a style icon) celebs love to say it with their tees. The latest ‘it girl’ obsession? The Paris Georgia Career Girl t-shirt, that’s taken the internet by storm.
The shirt in question is designed in collaboration with Joe Sweeney, a London-based artist who originally created the Career Girl slogan T-shirt back in January 2024. Cut to today, and the new version by Sweeney and Paris Georgia has already collected an impressive roster of celebrity fans, from Edie Campbell to Alexa Chung who, with her sister-in-law Christie Leigh, took to Instagram to show off matching ‘Career Girl’ baby Ts. And if tiny T-shirts aren’t your cup of tea, there are also long sleeve versions in cherry red and black, so you can find your favourite.
So, what makes a slogan T-shirt such sartorial catnip? There’s a certain ‘if you know, you know’ kudos that comes with wearing a niche reference, showing you're fully aware of the zeitgeist and you’re on top of your pop culture references, ultimately fulfilling a desire to be a part of that secret cool girl club. Take the viral Loewe ‘I Told Ya’ t-shirt that hit the big time after appearing in Challengers, then worn by Zendaya IRL, or Nicole Kidman who stepped out wearing a white Babygirl t-shirt, another T-shirt set to go stellar when the film comes out later this week.
Surprisingly, the 'Career Girl' top is still in stock in most colours (although the classic white has just sold out) online for £95, but (insider tip incoming) you can also get Joe Sweeney’s original khaki version for £40, too.
Time to join the career girl club…
