From Saoirse Ronan To Margot Robbie, Sustainability Dominated The Oscars Red Carpet

There was upcycling, vintage dresses and even sustainable diamonds.

As the ongoing discussions regarding fashion and sustainability dominate the collective consciousness, the Oscars red carpet proved to be a parade of outfits with a more mindful approach. There have been examples of more sustainable awards outfits over the last few weeks – Jennifer Aniston wore vintage Dior to the SAG Awards, for example, while Kate Middleton was one of the only BAFTA guests to actually adhere to the sustainable dress code – but the Oscars showcased sustainability on a much greater – and more diverse – scale.

There were vintage dresses, as seen on Margot Robbie and Lily Aldridge. The latter wore an archive Ralph Lauren gown, while Robbie's was a Chanel Couture creation from 1994, first worn on the catwalk by Claudia Schiffer.

Meanwhile, Saoirse Ronan wore a Gucci gown, the top of which was crafted from leftover fabric from the dress she wore to the BAFTAs last weekend. Similarly, Kaitlyn Dever wore a Louis Vuitton gown that she said was 'fully sustainable'.

The actor and star of Booksmart is an ambassador for the Red Carpet Green Dress(RCGD) initiative, which has an exclusive partnership with the Academy Awards in a bid to promote sustainability within the fashion industry.

Another celebrity to participate in the initiative was Léa Seydoux, who also chose Louis Vuitton. Made in partnership with RCGD, the gown featured organic silk faille — a newly launched Red Carpet Green Dress fabric made from TENCEL Luxe filament yarn.

It wasn't just the gowns, either. Billy Porter debuted a new collaboration between fine jewellery brand Lark & Berry and Diamond Foundry, a diamond growing company backed by Leonardo DiCaprio. Porter wore a 64.5ct necklace during his performance with Janelle Monae at the beginning of the ceremony, which is part of a sustainable collection.

Of course, sustainability is not a trend – we can only hope that it becomes the norm and the main concern for anyone choosing a dress but particularly those with great influence. As Dever said to E! News on the red carpet, 'It's really simple ... it's a matter of letting it be a part of your lifestyle, it's just about getting used to it. With fashion, I think you can maybe think a bit before you buy something brand new and I think you can support vintage ... and also look into the brands you're supporting.'
