During New York Fashion Week Peter Copping showed his first collection for Oscar de la Renta since the designer's passing last year.
Copping, who was appointed as successor at the house before Oscar passed away, presented a beautiful and respectful collection of ODLR signatures from tweed skirt suits to beautiful evening gowns.
The house have released a moving short film where we can watch the making of Copping's first collection, from the sketches to the fittings. Peter Copping says in the film: "The collection got developed relatively quickly in just three months so starting a new project and given the circumstances that was pretty difficult. But on the other hand I just had to get on and do it and not think too much or over intellectualise or procrastinate. It was quite spontaneous the process in some ways."
As for Oscar's legacy, he says: "It is my office now which is very important. I respect who Oscar is and was and all that he achieved. I certainly when I arrived in the house didn't want to come in and say 'everything has to change, I want new furniture, white marble.' That's not the important part of the process, you have to start working and have something to show first."
Copping added: "I like the idea of starting with black and white, a blank canvas in some ways and building upon that. I'm very happy because the reaction from people I heard was very positive. A lot of people said they could feel Oscar in the collection, so that is one of the things that I really wanted to achieve."
"We had the same sort of appreciation of women and beauty and beyond that of houses, gardens, antiques," Copping continues. "All of those things we would have had a lot of common ground and spoken the same language."
