The microbag was one of the biggest trends on the autumn/winter ’16 catwalks back in February, so it’s no surprise that the best-dressed front-row attendees at the recent New York, London, Milan and Paris fashion weeks were all wearing handbags that could barely contain their iPhones.
While everything else is oversized – think exaggerated sleeves, flared trousers and chandelier-earrings – handbags are on the decidedly small side, providing an antidote to the maximalist turn fashion has taken this season.
If you want to shrink your arm candy, there are two options. The first is a micro-sized version of a classic style, as seen at Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel. The other is the novelty, toy bag; think fun minaudière styles but with cross body straps (see: Sophia Webster, Anya Hindmarch and Dolce & Gabbana).
There are also some accessories designers whose raison d’etre is teeny tiny bags. Case in point is Simon Miller, whose petit hand-held bucket bag was omnipresent on street style stars this fashion month.
The best bit though? These designer steals are often a fraction of the price of their super-size counterparts, making them a more affordable option if you're strapped for cash...
