After Super Saturday, where pubs, restaurants and bars opened for the first time since lockdown started, ‘event dressing’ is very much a thing again. And while it’s not the same as the circuit of festivals and weddings that might be on your usual high-summer calendar, there’s still plenty to be excited about.
Take wearing heels, for example. They might once have been saved for a date or cocktail party, but in the new normal, a casual drink at your local deserves your snazziest shoes. And what about dressy dresses? We’ve all been wafting around the park in smocks and tent-shaped frocks, but now that (two household) dinner parties are back in business, it’s the right moment to dig out something with a touch more drama.
So, you’d probably usually never wear heels to the pub, but it feels like an appropriate form of celebration now that your local boozer is government sanctioned. A gingham blouse and barrel-leg jeans will provide a balance to dressier shoes.
Next up, the park. Ah, the park. We’re not bored, per se, but we do want to shake things up a little, starting with a sharp printed shirt dress and some slingback espadrilles. Warning: the latter will need breaking in so a long walk on their first outing is best avoided.
Garden Parties have also made a welcome return and what better way to style it out then with a summery twist on a classic suit? Count this as a cool alternative to a summer dress. We like them with a helping of playful, splashy retro prints or bright shirts worn under more sober-toned blazers and matching shorts.
Finally, dinner parties. Class this as the new going out out. The mood calls for something suitably glamorous. Think silky, jewel-toned and almost kaftan-like in silhouette or dresses oozing in drama – and don’t be stingy with the accessories.
