When it comes to fashion trends, first and foremost we always look to the catwalk for what’s going to be the big hitters, decided by designers for the season ahead. For SS20, the main sources of inspiration were the '70s, '90s and an ode to the great outdoors via jungle prints, lots of green and even actual gardening.

But there's also Instagram, which tends to become an encyclopaedia of the trends we're all actually wearing. This summer, that's everything from cut-out dresses to '70s sunglasses, the latter of which can be seen on the likes of Alexis Foreman. Look for brown, oversized aviators and ombre lenses for the perfect nod to the trend.

As seen on Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Hailey Bieber, the cut-out dress is also huge news this summer. Cult Gaia’s Serita dress has basically gone viral on Instagram, while Zara’s new drophas got luxury fashion buyers singing its praises.

Fringing, too, is having a moment, mainly on skirt hems and it's much easier to wear than you might think. Arket's midi is a prime example – simply add a white T-shirt and oversized blazer and you're good to go.

Over to accessories and chains, which have been bubbling up for a while, are being layered over footwear, from barely-there sandals at Gianvito Rossi to ballet pumps at Porte & Paire. Think of this as the upgrade to the beaded anklet.

In terms of bags, whether you're holidaying here or away, canvas bags with leather hardware are all over the shops and scream summer. Buy one that’s a little smarter that will also work as an upgrade to you back-to-work bag. Not your style? Ruched handbag straps can be seen all over the high street and make for an interesting new detail.
