Jade Jagger and her daughter Assisi hit headlines last May when they both announced their pregnancies at the same time. In this week’s Grazia, the jewellery designer tells Grazia that she’s loved bringing her son Ray up with her granddaughter Ezra. Jade's daughter Assisi, 22, had Ezra four weeks before Ray was born. ‘It was weird and I was a bit nervous about it, but it all came good in the end,’ explains Jade, 43.
'It was – and it still is – nice to have someone who really understands what I’m moaning about. Assisi and I can share those things and that’s been sweet. She gives me advice. Assisi has read all the books, while I break the rules!’ She adds, ‘It’s been great to start again because I had a big gap where I had empty nest syndrome and I felt a bit lonely. Now my life is very full.’ Jade reveals that she intends to be a very cool granny. She says, ‘I used to call my grandmother “nana” so that seems right to me, but maybe I’ll just be “Jade”, in that modern way.’
We spoke to Jade just days after she flew in from Ibiza where she owns a 16th Century ‘finca’. Jade was there to film a promotional video for a series of kaftans and a well-being space she has designed for the opening of Thomson’s new Sensatori Resort.
Jade is juggling work while bringing up her nine-month-old son Ray and is very much a believer in women having it all. ‘It can be a bit crazy,’ she laughs. ‘I’ve got help. But I think if you choose to have a family then most of us end up being working women these days. We’re capable of multi-tasking. You can watch Peppa Pig and write emails at the same time. It’s tough when I’ve been up a lot of the night, but if you like coffee and you’ve got stamina, it just takes practise.’
Ray is Jade’s third child – her first by her husband of three years, graphic designer Adrian Fillary. She has two daughters from a previous relationship, Assisi and Amba, 19. When Jade had Ray last year it meant that her father, Rolling Stones legend, Mick became a great-grandfather. She adds, ‘The children call him “pappy” and he’s a big family man, so I don’t think this is anything new for him. His family is just ever expanding. I think my husband and dad were both very happy that I had a baby boy, to get some testosterone in the family because there are a lot of girls. It’s not a perfect family, but it’s a strong family. The nice thing is how the different ages interact.’
